Annual John Coltrane Tribute 2023
A Love Supreme
One of the most exciting music nights of the year is the John Coltrane tribute at The Jazz Kitchen with Rob Dixon. This very special annual event is one of the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation’s sponsored performances. This year it was held on Sunday, January 22, 2023, and there were two sold-out shows. It was an amazing evening of jazz music celebrating John Coltrane and his amazing, historical record.
Not only is this annual tribute to John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” album a crowd favorite, but it is also one of saxophonist and Indianapolis’ Musical Mayor Rob Dixon’s favorite events too! Indy Jazz Fest Artistic Director Rob Dixon performed with Steve Allee, Brandon Meeks, and Steve Houghton.
John Coltrane recorded A Love Supreme in December 1964 and released it the following year. It was composed in a four-part suite and is a modern masterpiece! He presented it as a spiritual declaration that his musical devotion was now intertwined with his faith in God.
In many ways, the album mirrors Coltrane's spiritual quest that grew out of personal troubles, including his struggles with addiction.
“I was very excited, honored, and humbled to perform John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” on Sunday, January 22nd. This Coltrane masterpiece is a declaration that his devotion to music is intertwined with his faith in God.”

Truly a Day to Celebrate
Something else that made this particular tribute concert special was that it fell on the same date as two other important things in Indianapolis jazz history.
First, it was on the birthday of Indianapolis jazz trombone legend, composer, and arranger J. J. Johnson who was born on the date January 22, 1924.
And, it was also the day that the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation, Indianapolis Jazz Hall of Fame virtual museum website officially launched. You can read more about that project here.
