From the vibrant clubs on Indiana Avenue and throughout Indianapolis, the legacy of Indianapolis greats lives on through this project. Steve Allee, an Indianapolis native, has been meticulously crafting new compositions for his big band, drawing inspiration from the hometown heroes who shaped the city's musical landscape.

Naptown Sound - Full Circle, at Primary Sound Studios in May 2024. Each CD, complete with artwork, liner notes, and photography, promises to enchant music enthusiasts globally, with streaming options available for easy access.

Naptown Sound Full Circle is a part of the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation’s “From the 317” project. A collection of Indianapolis-based artists, creating original works focused on national and international exposure.

Making it Happen!

The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization will serve as the fiscal agent for ‘Naptown Sound’ project.  Donations made through the IJF for this project are tax deductible. (as allowable, please ask your tax professional)

Proceeds from CD sales will be donated to IJF education programs. 

 Total Budget - 50k
This will cover the production of recording, editing, mixing, mastering, recording fees for musicians. Also included are the CD pressing, inclusion on worldwide streaming services, and professional national radio and print publicity. 

About Steve Allee …

Pianist Steve Allee, a distinguished musical talent from Indianapolis, is recognized for his exceptional abilities as a performer, composer, and educator. As a Yamaha Performing Artist, Steve's musical journey has seen him share the stage with renowned artists such as Buddy Rich, Slide Hampton, James Moody, Benny Golson, Jimmy Cobb, and Peter Erskine.

Drawing inspiration from the vibrant musical history of Indiana Avenue, Steve has had the privilege of collaborating with esteemed musicians including Slide Hampton, James Spaulding, Killer Ray Appleton, and many others who have left their mark on the jazz scene.

Currently, Steve is an integral part of the Indianapolis Jazz Collective, where he joins forces with Rob Dixon, Nick Tucker, and Kenny Phelps to deliver captivating performances. Their collective efforts have led to memorable collaborations with jazz luminaries like Bobby Watson, Randy Brecker, Stefon Harris, Russell Malone, and Terrell Stafford.

Notably, Steve's longstanding partnership with the Rufus Reid 'Out Front Trio' has been a testament to his musical prowess. The trio's album 'Out Front' made waves on the 'Jazz Week' radio charts, securing the #1 spot during its 20-week run. Steve's contribution to Rufus Reid's Grammy-nominated 'Quiet Pride' Big Band Project further underscores his talent and versatility as a respected jazz artist.

A member of the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation’s “Indianapolis Jazz Hall of Fame,” Steve regularly performs with his big band, trio & quintet project throughout Indianapolis and around the US.

‘Naptown Sound, Composers Series’

In association with the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation’s educational outreach initiatives, Steve is set to host a series of 'Naptown Sound' Composing Master Classes. This enlightening series, open to the public at no cost, will span four sessions leading up to the band's recording.

Steve, a seasoned composer, will delve into his creative process, starting from initial musical sketches to the expansion and refinement of ideas and forms. Participants will have a unique opportunity to witness Steve's exploration of harmonies and orchestrations, transitioning from small ensembles to a full big band setting.

Throughout the classes, Steve will showcase recordings and scored examples of the distinctive 'Naptown Sound', unveiling the behind-the-scenes magic of music composition. Moreover, he will extend invitations to local Indianapolis composers to partake in the sessions, offering insights into their own creative methodologies.

As part of this engaging experience, students are encouraged to engage with these accomplished composers, sharing their compositions and ideas while gaining invaluable feedback and inspiration.
